Hans Leuenberger studied experimental physics (PhD thesis in nuclear physics) at the University of Basel. He worked for 12 years at Sandoz (today Novartis), spent a sabbatical at the University of Michigan writing a habilitation thesis in Pharmaceutics. In 1982 he became full professor of Pharmaceutical Technology at the University of Basel. He served as executive Vice-President of the Swiss Academy of Engineering Sciences (www.satw.ch) and as President of its Scientific Council. He was president of the Swiss Society of Pharm. Sciences. Hans mentored over 120 PhD students working today in the Pharm. Industry and published more than 160 papers. He has numerous awards (see www.ifiip.ch/award gallery) and is Dr. h.c. of Mahidol & of Mendeleyev University. Hans is Honorary Member of the Swiss Academy of Engineering Sciences, Fellow of the American Association of Pharmaceutical Scientists, Honorary President of CISDEM (http://institucional.us.es/cisdem/index.php/forum/8-ii-international-forum-cisdem), and a Member of the Real Academy of Pharmacy of Spain, etc.

Pharmaceutical Technology

Alexander Seifalian, Professor of Nanotechnology and Regenerative Medicine worked at the Royal Free Hospital and University College London for over 26 years, during this time he spent a period of time at Harvard Medical School looking at caused of cardiovascular diseases and a year at Johns Hopkins Medical School looking at treatment of liver. He published more than 647 peer-reviewed research papers, and registered 14 UK and International patents. He is currently CEO of NanoRegMed Ltd, working on the commercialisation of his research. During his career Prof Seifalian has led and managed many large projects with successful outcomes in terms of commercialisation and translation to patients. In 2007 he was awarded the top prize in the field for the development of nanomaterials and technologies for cardiovascular implants by Medical Future Innovation, and in 2009 he received a Business Innovation Award from UK Trade & Investment (UKTI). He was the European Life Science Awards’ Winner of Most Innovative New Product 2012 for the “synthetic trachea”. Prof Seifalian won the Nanosmat Prize in 2013 and in 2016 he received the Distinguish Research Award in recognition of his outstanding work in regenerative medicine from Heals Healthy Life Extension Society. His achievements include development of the world first synthetic trachea, lacrimal drainage conduit, and vascular bypass graft using nanocomposite materials, bioactive molecules and stem cell technology. He has over 15,000 media report from his achievement, include BBC, ITV, WSJ, CNN, and many more. Currently he is working on development and commercialisation of human organs using graphene based nanocomposite materials and stem cells technology.

Thomas J. Webster’s (H index: 84) degrees are in chemical engineering from the University of Pittsburgh (B.S., 1995) and in biomedical engineering from RPI (M.S., 1997; Ph.D., 2000). Prof. Webster has graduated/supervised over 149 visiting faculty, clinical fellows, post-doctoral students, and thesis completing B.S., M.S., and Ph.D. students. He is the founding editor-in-chief of the International Journal of Nanomedicine (5-year impact factor of 5.03). Prof. Webster is a fellow of AIMBE, BMES, IUSBE, and NAI. He also served as the President of SFB. He has appeared on BBC, NBC, ABC, Fox News, and other news outlets talking about medicine.

N. Schwarzer graduated in physics from the University of Chemnitz in July 1991. After several research projects abroad and a PhD in the field of contact mechanics in 1998, he became an assistant professor at the University of Chemnitz in 1999. In 2005, he founded the Saxonian Institute of Surface Mechanics on Germany’s biggest island, Ruegen (www.siomec.de). He has published a variety of papers, mainly in the fields of basic research and application of contact mechanical approaches for laminates, composites, and layered materials. Because of the need for better stability prediction and socioeconomic models, he started to apply concepts from theoretical physics in more down-to-earth fields like material science, school transport, and sales market analysis. Some of this work has finally led to ideas for the improvement of the original theoretical concepts.

Surface Mechanics

Naj Sharif, PhD, FARVO, FBPhS was educated and trained in England at Southampton University (BSc (Joint Honors: Biochemistry and Physiology); PhD (Neuroscience)). His pharmaceutical industry experience (>32 years) includes holding leadership positions in discovery research, drug development and regulatory affairs at Pfizer, Syntex (Roche), Alcon-Novartis and Santen. His 22-tenure at Alcon resulted in his contributions to the discovery/development and US FDA approvals of Travatan®, Patanol®, Simbrinza®, and Pazeo® to treat glaucoma/ocular hypertension and ocular allergies. At Santen he has contributed towards the in-licensing and acquisition of InnFocus Microshunt, and to various drug candidates. He is a Fellow of ARVO (FARVO), and of British Pharmacological Society (FBPhS). Dr. Sharif received the inaugural Dr. Roger Vogel Award for ocular pharmaceutical research, and the “Sir James Black Award” for contributions to drug discovery. He serves on the editorial boards of numerous journals, and is an Adjunct Professor at several Universities. He has published >210 papers, edited 2 books, and is the holder of 23 issued patents.

Drug Discovery & Development

Gus R. Rosania is a Professor of Pharmceutical Sciences at the University of Michigan College of Pharmacy. Here, he leads a research group studying the transport mechanisms responsible for the disposition of small molecule drugs from the whole organism to the subcellular level. His research group has taken a special interest in studying poorly soluble drugs with very large volumes of distribution. His investigations combine physical, chemical, biological and computational studies with the ultimate goal of repurposing drugs by developing novel formulations for site directed drug targeting and delivery.

Pharmceutical Sciences

Synopsis: Shyam S. Mohapatra, PhD, MBA, FNAI, FAIMBE, FAAS is a Distinguished USF Health Professor and Director of the Division of Translational Medicine at the University of South Florida Department of Internal Medicine. He also directs the USF Center for Research and Education in Nanobioengineering. He serves as a research career scientist at the James A. Haley VA Hospital in Tampa His research has brought USF over $30 million in extramural funds, and he has published over 200 papers and holds over 40 U.S. and foreign patents. He is recognized for his many inventions in the field of nanoscale biomedical diagnostics and therapeutics in cancers, asthma, viral infections, and traumatic brain injury. In cancers, his inventions and co-inventions have led to several technology platforms and products for innovative anti-cancer drug discovery, drug development, and personalized cancer treatment. His research has spawned inventions that have spun out companies. He co-founded Transgenex Nanobiotech Inc, a USF spin-out company that focuses on commercializing nanoscale innovations. He is a Charter Fellow of the National Academy of Inventors; a fellow of the American Academy of Allergy, Asthma & Immunology; American Association of Medical and Biological Engineers; and American Association of Advancement of Science; and is one of the inaugural (2014) inductees of the Florida Inventors Hall of Fame. Since 2014, he has served as Associate Dean of Graduate Programs at the USF College of Pharmacy and established a highly innovative Master of Science program in pharmaceutical nanotechnology with additional concentrations in Drug Discovery and Development and Biomedical engineering. This program has grown exponentially generating a revenue of ~$1Million in three years. He founded and has directed the VA colorectal cancer cell genomics consortium since 2017, which encompases linked (about 12 different VA Hospitals) research programs in colorectal cancers.

Nanobioengineering

Herbert Gleiter received his Ph.D. in Physics. In 1973, Gleiter became Chair Professor of Materials Science and founded in 1988 today’s Leibniz Institute of New Materials at Saarbruecken, Germany. In 1994, he was appointed Member of the Executive Board of the Research Center Karlsruhe, Germany, and 4 years later he became the Founding Director of the Center’s Institute of Nanotechnology. In 2012 the Chinese Academy of Sciences and the University of Nanjing founded the “Herbert Gleiter Institute of Nanoscience” and appointed him as the Institute’s Founding Director. Prof. Gleiter’s received more than 40 prizes, seven universities awarded him honorary doctorates. He is a Member of 12 National Academies.of Science and/or Engineering. In the late 70’s he opened the way to a new kind of materials, called today nano-crystalline materials and more recently, he initiated the new field of nano-glasses. It is the attractive perspective of these nano-glasses that they have the potential to provide the basis a new world of glass based technologies.
